Viscosity refers to the impedance ability of a fluid to flow, which is expressed in pharmacopoeia as dynamic viscosity, kinematic viscosity, or intrinsic viscosity. Measuring the viscosity of liquid drugs or drug solutions can distinguish or check their purity.

Viscometers are also widely used in the research and development of drugs, especially in the formulation design of some ointments and injections. Different formulations result in different rheological properties of drugs, which has a significant impact on the production and use of drugs.

In Part II (Western Medicine) of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, requirements are put forward for viscosity control of some agents. For example, in Appendix IF, humectant, preservatives, thickening agents, antioxidants and transdermal enhancers can be added to ointment and cream as required. Ointments and creams should have appropriate viscosity, and pastes generally have a higher consistency. But it should be easy to apply to the skin or mucous membrane, not melting, and the viscosity should change very little with the season. In Appendix IG (eye preparation), Appendix IQ (ear preparation), Appendix IR (nasal preparation) and Appendix IU (gel preparation), it is also required that the viscosity of the above preparations should be adjusted as required.


The ST204C fully automatic dual-purpose drug kinematic viscometer is designed and manufactured strictly in accordance with the general principles 0633 of the 2020 Chinese Pharmacopoeia, including the first method for measuring Pinot's capillary viscosity and the second method for measuring Ubbelohde's capillary viscosity.
