Vaseline is a semi liquid mixture of alkanes or saturated hydrocarbons, obtained by fractional distillation of petroleum. Its state is between solid and liquid at room temperature. Vaseline is classified into three categories based on its scope of use, physicochemical properties, and production requirements using internationally recognized product standards: pharmaceutical Vaseline, industrial Vaseline, and capacitor Vaseline. In China, a national standard for ordinary Vaseline (GB 6732-86) has been added.

Medical Vaseline is further divided into white Vaseline and yellow Vaseline according to its refining depth, and is an important raw material for medical ointments, ointments, and creams.

The fourth part of the 2015 Chinese Pharmacopoeia stipulates that white and yellow vaseline need to be inspected for cone penetration in accordance with General Rule 0983 for medicinal excipients. Consistency refers to the degree to which paste, cream, creamy, semi solid, or high viscosity samples resist deformation under stress. The method of measuring consistency is called penetration method, where the harder the test material, the sharper and closer the test head is to a needle shape.

How to choose the three types of cones specified in the pharmacopoeia

① I cone is recommended for testing samples of oil based matrices such as Vaseline

② For testing samples of emulsion based matrices, it is recommended to use No. II and No. III cones due to their low viscosity;
